Last Salon at the Saloon

Michael P MacDonald & Ciaran Rock

We celebrated Michael P MacDonald’s final week as writer in residence in Heraghthy’s Bar, Manorhamilton on Wednesday the 13th July, 2017 with a wonderful night of literature, song & poetry! During his residency, Michael has been conducting writing workshops with men’s group in Manorhamilton, residents in Loughan House & a weekly session with locals in Heraghty’s Bar.

To start off the Last Salon at the Saloon, Michael read extracts from his New York bestselling book All Souls: A Family Story from Southie Easter Rising: An Irish American Coming Up from Under. His wonderful work was met with howls of laughter and plenty of tears.

Afterwards we were entertained by some of Leitrim’s finest musicians, Dee Armstrong from Kila & Ciaran Rock from Freespeakingmonkeys who performed a number of original songs inspired by Michael’s books. If there is ever a film inspired by Michaels life, these songs should without a doubt be included in the soundtrack!

We were also serenaded by the upcoming, extraordinary musician Cian Rock who sang some of us brilliant original songs. He is without a doubt someone to keep an eye on, next time we see him perform, it’ll be onstage at the Grammy’s & not in Heraghty’s bar!

We were also treated by the impeccable poet Stephen Murphy when he performed his moving Before You Push the Chair to a spellbound audience.

The evening was a beautiful reminder that while Leitrim may be small, the people are drowning in talent. It was a wonderful send-off for the much loved Michael, & while we know he has to leave, we hope he comes back to visit us again soon!
