Last time North Carolina band Woody Pines toured over here, reviewers unanimously declared them to be one of the most entertaining acts on the Americana circuit.

 This summer the four-piece returns for their biggest ever UK and Ireland tour to date, and promising once more to deliver what The Scotsman declared was “a rollicking and engagingly idiosyncratic” show.

 

Maverick magazine has praised their “intoxicating blend of rural and urban stringband, country blues, ragtime and jug band music”, and after they appeared before him at the big Nelsonville Folk & Blues Festival, Billy Joe Shaver, the top gun Outlaw Country legend came on stage and declared: “They’re the best damn band I’ve ever heard!”

Legendary radio presenter ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris is a fan and after playing tracks from their last album, Counting Alligators, told listeners to his BBC Radio 2 show, he thought they were “superb”.

Gaelscoil Chluainín presents their musical Grease as Gaeilge, a very ambitious production and the first of its kind in this part of the country. The cast includes 61 children from all areas of North Leitrim ranging from age 6-12.  This is a culmination of the eclectic mix of talents amidst parents and staff; graphic designers, artists, musicians, sculptors and stylists, which combined with the wonderful acting ability of the children guarantees a great nights entertainment

THE IRISH FILM INSTITUTE PRESENT EURO- PAEANS - CELEBRATING IRELAND & EUROPE IN FILM

In celebration of Ireland’s Presidency of the EU (January to June 2013), the Irish Film Institute presents a programme of 8 short films from collections at the IFI Irish Film Archive.

How do we view Europe? How does Europe view us? These are two questions this collection of archive film endeavours to touch upon.

 

While The Saints Went Marching Out (1967) compares the industrialisation of the mid-60s to the missionary zeal of the Early Middle Ages, Les Infants d’Irland (1958) is an outsider’s view of a day in the life of an Irish family complete with a barefoot morning walk to school and an evening tea spent by hay bales. Arguably one of the most striking pieces of the programme, Heinrich Bolls’ 1961 Irland und Seine Kinder ponders over Ireland’s relationship with time and wonders whether its children go to bed too late. 

 

These films will be presented alongside Irish films which capture key moments in our developing relationship with Europe – such as the Gael Linn’s 1963 newsreel marking the launch of Aer Lingus Winter Sunshine Flights to Malaga and films from the Radharc team comparing Irish and European social and spiritual life.  Full programme is available from the Glens.

DERVISH – ALBUM LAUNCH

The trad super-group launch their first studio album in five years The Thrush in The Storm.  Recorded in the Glens Centre earlier this year, the album has gained rave reviews with Hearth Magazine describing it as “ one of their hottest yet” and as “a solid return to their roots in the Irish session culture of County Sligo.”.   Join us for a night of fast and furious tunes and sublime songs with one of the most technically dazzling groups on the Irish music scene. 8.30pm. Donegal sisters The Henry Girls present a selection of darkly beautiful roots music, from bluegrass murder ballads to gypsy torch songs, dirty blues to soul salvation. With the harp and piano as their main accompaniment, their shimmering harmonies weave a continuous spell throughout their music. The siblings have a growing international profile and have in the past year toured in the UK, USA and Germany, as well as performances in Sweden, Holland and Italy.

The Irish Times simply described their stage show as “a joy”.

Ringleader, maestro, and boss Chauncy has a vision: to create a show dedicated to the lost art of the cabaret. But the idiots he works with have other ideas.  In Le Cabaret Oublié we join this family of clowns on a spectacular voyage into the absurd. From music, to dance, to song, storytelling, theatre, and magic - these hopeful fools put their hearts on the line to create the Show of All Shows!

An immersive underground cabaret experience, Le Cabaret Oublié is a clown show torn from some dusty basement in Pigalle and delivered to your doorstep for your enjoyment!
Le Cabaret Oublié is a world premiere developed exclusively at the Glens Centre, Manorhamilton and performed at the Glens Centre and at the Hawks Well Theatre as part of Cairde Festival, Sligo

The Alan Kelly Gang will be joined by internationally acclaimed, Scottish songstress, Eddi Reader, (formerly of Fairground Attraction) and Trashcan Sinatra’s guitarist and songwriter, John Douglas for this very special 3rd annual collaboration tour of Ireland.   Fronted by Ireland’s piano accordion maestro, described by New York’s Irish Voice as in league with the best accordionists in the world and with three of Ireland’s finest musicians Steph Geremia (flute & vocals), Maureen Brown (fiddle) and Tony Byrne 9 guitar) all critically acclaimed masters of their craft, The Alan Kelly Gang have been creating a stir on the traditional and folk circuit taking their audiences by storm and impressing both music lover and critic alike.

The past few years have been extremely busy for the band with top festival appearances worldwide including: WOMADelaide, Australia; Winnipeg Folk Festival, Canada and Festival Irlandays, Paris to mention just a few. They have earned a formidable reputation on the live music scene and honed their distinctive and exciting sound through constant touring. On this tour they will preview material from their forthcoming album due for release Sept 2013.
